Former Vice President Dick Cheney warns that if the United States doesn't deal with the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group that beheaded an American journalist, it faces an attack much larger than 9/11.

"That's obviously a terrible development," Cheney said of photojournalist James Foley's killing, "but magnify that a million times over, because that's what's in store for the rest of the world if we don't deal effectively with this crisis."

Cheney appeared on Fox News Channel's "Hannity" on Wednesday to discuss the terror threat against the United States.

Cheney said he is convinced there will be another mass-casualty attack someday in the United States, "only next time they'll have deadlier weapons" and will produce hundreds of thousands of casualties.

Cheney criticized President Barack Obama for not taking ISIS seriously enough. Earlier this year, Obama referred to the group as a "JV" squad.

The Islamic State has taken over large portions of Iraq and Syria and says it will raise its flag over the White House.

Cheney said he has wrestled with whether Obama is naïve, inexperienced, or just hopeful in his policy of dealing with terrorists. He said he finally concluded that Obama is discovering late in his administration that his worldview is "fundamentally flawed."

The world is a "mean, nasty place on occasion," Cheney said, and a strong United States is needed to deal with it.

"I think that every single day that goes by he's finding there's a bigger and bigger gulf between his hoped-for view of the world and reality," Cheney said.
