Dick Cheney: Obama's Iran Talks 'Almost Certainly Doomed to Fail'

By    |   Wednesday, 01 April 2015 09:40 PM EDT

The Obama administration's effort to hammer out an agreement with Iran on its nuclear program is "almost certainly doomed to fail" — and military force is the best way to limit nuclear proliferation, former Vice President Dick Cheney says.

At a Republican Party dinner in Woodland Park, New Jersey, on Tuesday night, Cheney also called President Barack Obama's tenure "the most damaging, certainly, since World War II," NJ.com reports.

"There have been a number of times when we've been faced with the potential threat of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East. What's worked is military force," Cheney said at the annual tribute to the late President Ronald Reagan hosted by the conservative Young America's Foundation.

"Unfortunately, Barack Obama doesn't seem to understand that."

Given what's been leaked about details of the negotiations, Cheney said he was "deeply suspicious" that anything will be produced "nearly as effective as we did together with the Israelis in limiting other nuclear programs," referring to Israeli strikes in Iraq and Libya, NJ.com reports.

Often critical of the president's foreign policy, Cheney also said it does no good to negotiate with Iran because government officials there can't be trusted, The Wall Street Journal reports.

"They have lied and cheated and deceived continuously," Cheney said.

"They're motivated and led by a man who believes in a radical view of Islam. I don’t see any good that can come out of this current effort."

Cheney said America's traditional partners in the Middle East have "all lost faith and confidence" in the United States.

"We have a terrible situation now. We need leadership to turn it around," Cheney said.

Talks with Iran are continuing past a Tuesday deadline.
