Iowa Democrats overwhelmingly support accepting Syrian refugees into the United States — a response that's exactly the opposite of how Republicans view the issue, a new poll shows.
The Quinnipiac University survey released Wednesday finds 81 percent of Democrats in the Hawkeye State support allowing refugees from the war-torn nation into America, with just 13 percent opposed. Also, 80 percent support accepting the refugees into Iowa, with 14 percent opposed.
The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.
The response in the early voting state is precisely the opposite of a
Quinnipiac University poll finding among Republican voters released Tuesday.
In that survey, 81 percent of likely Republican caucus participants said they opposed allowing refugees into the nation, while 15 percent supported it; 82 percent opposed accepting the refugees into the state, with 13 percent were in support.
President Barack Obama is standing by his plan to allow 10,000 refugees into America despite criticism from lawmakers —
including some in his own party.
A bill to halt resettling Syrian refugees, however,
passed the House with a veto-proof majority last week.
According to the pollster, another difference between Democrat and Republican voters in Iowa is that the Democrats say they are less worried about a terrorist attack in America: 17 percent of Iowa Democrats say they are "very worried" about such an attack.
In the Tuesday survey, 53 percent of Republican voters were "very worried" about an attack here.
