Several members of a panel that advises the president and the Department of Homeland Security on infrastructure issues tendered their resignations late Monday, The Hill reported.
The resignations from the National Infrastructure Advisory Council came one day before the panel was set to hold its quarterly business meeting. The meeting went on as planned Tuesday with the majority of members in attendance, the White House said in a statement to The Hill.
The report did not specify how many members quit. It can hold up to 30 members, who are appointed by the president from the private sector, academia, and state and local governments.
"We can confirm that a number of members of the NIAC who had been appointed under the previous administration have submitted their resignation," a White House official told The Hill. "The NIAC met today as planned with the majority of its members, who remain committed to the important work of protecting our Nation's critical infrastructure."
The resignations come after President Donald Trump last week disbanded two business councils as members were dropping out in protest over statements he made following the unrest in Charlottesville, Virginia. The entire membership of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities also resigned over Trump's statements that both sides were to blame in the violence that started over a group of white nationalists rallying to save a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.
