BRUSSELS — The European Commission wants the successor to Dominique Strauss-Kahn as head of the International Monetary Fund to come from the European Union.
EU Commission spokeswoman Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen said Thursday the EU wants continuity at the helm of the IMF and said the 27 EU members can "identify strong candidates in the midst of the European Union."
German Chancellor Angela Merkel also insisted that Europe should nominate a candidate. A European has traditionally led the IMF but developing nations such as China and Brazil have questioned that presumption as outdated in an increasingly globalized economy.
Strauss-Kahn resigned Wednesday, saying he wants to devote "all his energy" to fighting sexual assault charges in New York.
