Hillary Clinton's emails containing classified information were forwarded to ex-New York Rep. Anthony Weiner so he could print them out for his then-wife, top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, it was revealed Wednesday.

FBI Director James Comey's explanation, reported by the Washington Post, came during testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee as he defended his handling of politically explosive investigations surrounding the 2016 presidential race.

Under questioning from the ranking Democrat, California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Comey revealed new details about how Clinton's private-server emails ended up on the shamed Weiner's computer — where they were discovered during a separate probe of Weiner's possible inappropriate communications with a minor, the Post reported.

"Somehow, her emails were being forwarded to Anthony Weiner, including classified information," Comey testified, the Post reported, adding: "His then-spouse Huma Abedin appears to have had a regular practice of forwarding emails to him for him to print out for her so she could deliver them to the secretary of state."

Clinton and Abedin were being investigated for possible mishandling of classified material, but Comey said the FBI ultimately dropped the matter without seeking charges because they couldn't show either of them intended to violate the law, the Post reported.

"Really the central problem we had with the whole email investigation was proving people . . . had some sense they were doing something unlawful. That was our burden and we were unable to meet it," he said.

Comey said he'd been interviewed by the Justice Department's inspector general as part of an internal probe of how the FBI handled the politically explosive Clinton case.

"I want that inspection, I want my story told,'" he said, the Post reported. "If I did something wrong, I want to hear that.'"

"Lordy, has this been painful," he added. "I've gotten all kinds of rocks thrown at me and this has been really hard, but I think I've done the right thing at each turn."
