Harry Reid: 'I Feel Sorry' for Boehner

By    |   Thursday, 11 July 2013 11:55 AM EDT

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has opened up about the handling of key issues by House Speaker John Boehner saying, "I feel sorry" for him.

"Pick an issue," Reid told reporters during a press conference. "How about the farm bill? Last year's farm bill, this year's farm bill. He has dissension in his own ranks. Post office: He's just letting that go, hoping it goes out of everyone's mind. It hasn't. We passed it here on a bipartisan basis, he ignored it. Sales tax, online sales: he's just ignored that. The budget. Let's go to conference on that!"

Reid continued, "Now immigration. He is saying the bipartisan bill that we've done, he is not going to touch that. Well, we're going to continue to press."

Boehner has maintained that he will not bring the bipartisan immigration reform bill that passed out of the Senate last month to the House floor without the support of a majority of Republicans.

"The American people, the vast majority of American people, Democrats, Republicans, support what we did," said Reid. "Conservative organizations are running ads now, saying, 'Mr. Boehner, Republicans, why don't you do something about this?' So I guess I feel sorry for the Speaker."

The GOP hit back at the Nevada Democrat for his comments. One House GOP leadership aide told Politico that Reid's public ribbing of Boehner was "incredibly stupid and childish."

The unidentified aide added, "Boehner's standing in his conference is, if anything enhanced by criticism from prominent Democrats that his members don't like or respect him very much."

"It's noise and if anything diminishes the Senate majority leader," said the aide.

According to Politico, Reid and Boehner have not had a one-on-one meeting for months.

"The relationship is probably hard to be frosty when there is no relationship," GOP Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah said, adding, "When Sen. Reid, with that much experience, resorts to third-grade tactics, it's not a good sign."
