CNN: Hagel Nomination Could Come Next Week

By    |   Friday, 04 January 2013 07:00 PM EST

President Barack Obama is expected to nominate former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel as Defense Secretary — with one White House source telling senior congressional officials on Friday that the appointment is already “locked down.”

Hagel’s nomination could come as early as next week, CNN reports.

A Republican, Hagel served in the Senate from 1997 until he retired on Jan. 3, 2009.

The White House has long said that no final decisions had been made, but one source told CNN late on Thursday that the president was "mulling" over nominations this week in Hawaii.

Another White House source, however, told CNN on Friday that Obama "has not offered the job to anyone."

In addition, White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew is expected to be nominated as Treasury Secretary, also as early as next week, CNN reports.
