Poll: 88 Percent Favor Background Checks on All Gun Sales

Eighty-eight percent of American voters strongly or somewhat support background checks on all gun sales, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll taken after 21 people were shot and killed at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Eight percent strongly or somewhat oppose background checks.

Here is how the poll, released Thursday, breaks down:

  • 75% strongly or somewhat support the creation of a national database with information about each gun sale. Eighteen percent strongly or somewhat oppose the data base.
  • 67% strongly or somewhat support banning assault-style weapons. Twenty-five percent strongly or somewhat oppose a ban.
  • 76% strongly or somewhat support requiring all gun owners to store their guns in a safe storage unit, compared to 15% who strongly or somewhat oppose it.
  • 81% strongly or somewhat support making private gun sales and sales at gun shows subject to background checks, while 11% strongly or somewhat oppose it.
  • 84% strongly or somewhat support preventing sales of all firearms to people reported as dangerous to law enforcement by a mental health provider, compared to 9% who oppose it.
  • 54% strongly or somewhat support equipping teachers and school staff with concealed firearms to respond in the event of a school shooting, while 35% strongly or somewhat oppose it.

The poll, conducted on Wednesday, surveyed 1,920 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
