Gov. Walker: Congress Can Still Find Way to Avoid Sequester

By    |   Sunday, 24 February 2013 01:16 PM EST

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker held out hope that Congress will come to a deal before the looming sequester takes effect Friday.

The Badger State is poised to lose $1.8 million in income and 36,000 jobs if the planned cuts go into effect.

“If we’re not careful, a tax increase on one end could be a problem,” he said on “Fox News Sunday “Severe cuts on the other end could be a problem. Our hope is between now and March 1, they’ll find a way to provide some better alternatives to the cuts in the sequester.”

The Republican also said he has no plans to join with several other GOP governors — most recently Florida’s Rick Scott — in taking advantage of federally funded healthcare aid for the poor.

Wisconsin's decision not to participate in the federal Medicaid program that is part of Obamacare “was a better deal for us,” he said.

“Every state’s different,” Walker added. “In our case, we actually reduced the number of uninsured, we reduced the number of people on Medicaid, and we actually saved a little bit of money.”
