The Chinese government has begun "an all-out assault” on the United States by denying that the coronavirus originated in Wuhan, and rejecting attempts to connect the outbreak to the country, according to Asia expert Gordon Chang.
Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Lin Songtian said on Sunday, “Although the epidemic first broke out in China, it did not necessarily mean that the virus is originated from China, let alone ‘made in China.’”
Chang told Fox News on Thursday that China has prepared a public opinion campaign against the U.S. for the past month, one that aims to make Americans look petty, racist and irresponsible for tying the virus, which is officially named COVID-19, to China.
"This an all-out assault on the United States," Chang said, adding that officials should continue to call COVID-19 the “Wuhan virus” as a way of connecting the disease to China, and forcing the country to take responsibility for its spread.
"This isn't a Republican thing. We all need to unite and for people to say, 'this is racist' is irresponsible," Chang said. "There is no race known as Wuhanese."
National security adviser Robert O’Brien said on Wednesday, while at the conservative-leaning think tank the Heritage Foundation, that China “covered up,” the outbreak.
"There's lots of open-source reporting from China, from Chinese nationals, that the doctors involved were either silenced or put in isolation, or that sort of thing, so that the word of this virus could not get out," O’Brien said, according to Fox News. “It probably cost the world community two months.”
