Obama Campaign Casting President as Promise Keeper

Wednesday, 04 January 2012 04:20 PM EST

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama's campaign wants to portray the president as a man of conviction as Republicans scrutinize his record on the economy and federal debt.

The campaign emailed supporters a video of Obama's Iowa victory speech in 2008, noting that he kept the big promises he made that night on issues like reforming health care, cutting taxes for the middle class and ending the war in Iraq.

But the approach brings scrutiny to Obama's handling of the economy and also raises questions about unfulfilled promises such as closing the military prison for terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and changing the culture of Washington.

Republicans say they plan to use the president's own words against him, pointing to promises they say that have not been fulfilled.
