Republicans are already comparing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to an another sharp-tongued New York political leader: President Donald Trump himself.
Trump and Ocasio-Cortez are "two sides of the same coin," Meghan McCain has said, reports The Hill, while saying the New York Democrat is "just like Trump on Twitter."
Rep. Adam Kinzinger agrees that there are comparisons between the two, and he finds that "unfortunate."
“Whether it’s President Trump or AOC, it’s all based on ginning up anger and fear and it's unfortunate,” the Illinois Republican told The Hill. "I think it's that kind of stuff that's killing our ability to get done things like solve the government shutdown. … If you look at Twitter, not everyone is on Twitter, but all the loudest voices are."
Another GOP source, whose name was not mentioned, told The Hill that the two New Yorkers are the same person.
“She’s about the extremes of her party: free college, free health care, jobs for all," the senior source said. "Trump is about being tough on borders and pro-life policies. They are the bases of their parties and the loudest voices of their parties.”
Ocasio-Cortez this week ridiculed the suggestion, telling The Hill that it's"unoriginal" and she thinks the comparison is "irresponsible."
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., called the comparisons "absurd," but at the same time, the brash New Yorker is already coming under fire from more senior Democratic colleagues.
Some are angry over her defeat of former House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rep. Joe Crowley, while others are angry over her association with Justice Democrats, which has promised to target Democrats the group does not believe are progressive enough.
