Google has put together a cybersecurity team aimed at responding to attacks against governments and key groups, The Hill is reporting.

The Google Cybersecurity Action Team will consist of cybersecurity experts from within Google. It is being set up to give customers advisory services for security plans and incident response services. In addition, it will detail ways to deploy Google Cloud in a secure way.

"Cybersecurity is at the top of every C-level and board agenda, given the increasing prominence of software supply chain exploits, ransomware, and other attacks," Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said Tuesday.

"The Google Cybersecurity Action Team is part of our ongoing commitment to be the best partner for our enterprise and government customers along their security transformation journey."

Phil Venables, the chief information security officer and vice president of Google Cloud, said he hoped the new team would be the "world’s premier cybersecurity advisory team."

"This group has a singular mission: supporting the security and digital transportation of governments and critical infrastructure, enterprises, and small businesses, and really the vision of this team is to guide customers through the cycle of their security transformation," Venables said.

Axios noted FBI Director Christopher Wray had said in June that cyberthreats against the U.S. government and companies were "increasing."

"We think the cyberthreat is increasing almost exponentially," Wray told a House Judiciary Committee. "Ransomware alone, the total volume of amounts paid in ransomware, has tripled over the last year. We're investigating 100 different ransomware variants.

"We're obviously investigating scores and scores and scores of nation-state intrusions and other kinds of cybercriminal attacks, so the scale of this is something that I don't think this country has ever really seen anything quite like it, and it's going to get much worse."
