Gingrich: GOP Keeps Control; Voters Affirm GOP Mandate

By    |   Tuesday, 06 November 2012 11:08 PM EST

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said American voters’ decision to return a controlling majority to the U.S. House sends a clear message to Congress: Shrink government and lower taxes.

Gingrich also noted the race for the White House and the status of key Senate seats, where the Democrats had a slim majority going into Tuesday’s elections, remained uncertain late into the evening — reflecting a nation that is deeply divided.

“It’s amazing to watch these returns. I’m here with a group of friends and we’re looking at these results and you see on Fox News, at least, Romney 162 electoral votes; Obama 157. But you see so many things up in the air,” said the former GOP presidential candidate in a telephone interview with Newsmax TV.

“But this is clearly both a closer race than [those] of us who were for Romney expected and a closer race for those who were for Obama expected. So this is going to be a very exciting evening.”

Gingrich said the vote results for many U.S. House seats were the clearest reflection of Americans’ sentiments.

“The House has clearly now gone Republican. Speaker John Boehner will be re-elected. So, in that sense, they have been reaffirmed by the American people,” he said.
“They have a mandate to fight for lower taxes and smaller government.

“The Senate is a muddle. We’re all, of course, waiting to see what happens here in the presidential race. We have to wait much closer in many ways than many of thought it would be.”
