Geithner to Join Council on Foreign Relations Later This Month

Wednesday, 06 February 2013 10:32 AM EST

Timothy F. Geithner, who ended his term as U.S. Treasury Secretary in January, will join the Council on Foreign Relations later this month.

Geithner, 51, will be a distinguished fellow in New York, where the organization is based, the group said today in a statement. He was previously a senior fellow at CFR in 2001.

At the helm of the Treasury Department in President Barack Obama’s administration beginning in January 2009, Geithner oversaw the Troubled Asset Relief Program bailouts of companies including Citigroup Inc. and General Motors Co., steered the financial rules revamp and negotiated with congressional leaders on the budget and debt limit.

He played a central role in formulating U.S. strategy to avert economic collapse and reform the financial system, while also tackling a broad set of international economic challenges, CFR said in the statement.
