Fifty-two percent of Americans say the war in Afghanistan was not a mistake, according to a new Gallup poll.

Forty-three percent say the U.S. erred getting into the war.

Here are how the survey results break down:

  • 66% of Republicans say the U.S. is safer from terrorism because of the war, compared to 25% who say it is less safe.
  • 33% Democrats say the country is safer because of the war, while 58% say it is less safe.
  • 35% of independents say the U.S. is safer, compared to 51% who say it is less safe.

The poll, conducted Aug. 15-30, surveyed 2,291 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
