Gallup Poll: Voters View of GOP More Positive

Voters have a more positive view of Republicans since last year, a new survey shows.

The Gallup poll found Americans with a similar opinion for both Democrats and Republicans – with 40 percent favorable and 57 percent unfavorable – but noted a remarkable comeback for the GOP, which sunk to a 28 percent rating during the 2013 government shutdown.

Gallup notes voters have typically rated the Democratic party more positively since first polling on the question in 1992, “so the current parity between the two is a positive sign for the GOP and a negative one for the Democratic Party,” the pollster finds.

Current opinions of Democrats are among the worst the pollster says it has measured in the past 20 years. Its worst showing was a 41 percent favorability rating in late March 2010, after Obamacare was signed into law, Gallup notes.

The margin of error in the new poll is plus or minus 4 percentage points.
The polling boost for the GOP was the second in as many days.

A New York Times/CBS News poll Wednesday showed support for Republican candidates has been increasing as President Barack Obama’s approval ratings head south, with a 45 percent of voters saying they’d pick a Republican if elections were held today.

Other polls have shown Americans also prefer the Republicans over Democrats when it comes to keeping the nation prosperous and safe from international threats.
