Fox News Channel is finished pushing Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's presidential campaign after his poor showing so far in the GOP primaries, Gabriel Sherman writes at
New York Magazine.
Speculation among media watchers and Republican pundits was that Fox was pushing Rubio as the establishment, donor class candidate, but "this alliance now seems to be over," Sherman writes. He cites three sources at Fox as saying network chairman Roger Ailes is telling people he has lost confidence in Rubio's ability to win.
"We're finished with Rubio," Ailes reportedly told one Fox host. "We can't do the Rubio thing anymore."
Then there is the
recent New York Times report on a private meeting between Rubio and Democratic New York Sen. Chuck Schumer in 2013 where they successfully sold Ailes and Fox's parent News Corporation head Rupert Murdoch on the Gang of Eight immigration bill.
"Roger hates seeing his name in print," Sherman quoted one longtime Ailes associate. "He was appalled the dinner was reported."
Rubio was grilled heavily on Fox Tuesday night by Megyn Kelly and Brett Baier and again Wednesday morning by Martha MacCallum as he tried to spin his poor showings in every state but Minnesota.
Meanwhile, Ailes is looking for another candidate to back, Sherman reports.
"He's thinking, 'What do we do about the whole damn thing?'" he quoted one of Ailes' friends as saying.
