Rep. Fleming: Obama a 'Ruler' Who Can't Be Trusted

By    |   Tuesday, 09 July 2013 12:25 PM EDT

President Barack Obama cannot be trusted to police immigration reform, and his past record proves it, Republican Rep. John Fleming charged on the House floor.

"Whatever we pass into law, we know he's going to cherry-pick" for enforcement, the Louisiana congressman said Monday, citing the president's refusal to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, his selective implementation of parts of Obamacare, and his hotly contested recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board.

"He’s not a president; he’s a ruler," Fleming continued. "If he can just pass whatever laws that are going to be passed and then pick and choose the laws that he’s going to enforce and he’s going to obey, then we no longer have the checks and balances that go along with the presidency," Fleming said.

"This president is doing something I have never seen a president do before," continued the three-term representative who won his House seat in the same election that carried Obama to the White House. "In a tripartite government with its checks and balances, we have lost the balances."

Fleming called the Senate immigration bill "amnesty."

"One of the biggest fears we have about the Senate amnesty bill — and there’s no question about it, it’s amnesty by any measure, by any metric — is that we can’t trust the president. We can’t trust him," Fleming said.

Even though freshman Rep. David Valadao, a California Republican who was in the chair at the time, rebuked him for his personal attack against the president, Fleming received support from other GOP members.

Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas said, "You can’t just go by what’s being said. The president promised to secure the border. It hasn’t [been secured]. The American people are sick of promises not being kept.

"The American people are not stupid," added Gohmert. "Lincoln pointed out, 'You can fool some of the people all of the time,' but it's like this administration thinks they're going to fool enough of the people enough of the time to continue to pass things that hurt America."
