Gunshots heard in the background of a video text message aired by CNN match the approximate time that 18-year-old Michael Brown Jr. was shot to death by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri,
The Washington Post reports.
Chaim Haas, head of communications for Glide texting service, told the Post's Erik Wemple Blog, "Because Glide is the only messaging application using streaming video technology, each message is simultaneously recorded and transmitted, so the exact time can be verified to the second. In this case, the video in question was created at 12:02:14 PM CDT on Saturday, Aug. 9."
The shooting occurred at about noon on Aug. 9.
Haas told the Post that the recording is "absolutely" authentic, though he said he cannot state whether the gunshots heard in the background of the chat are those being fired at Brown.
CNN aired
the tape earlier this week without verifying its authenticity. The network later questioned itself for doing so.
