NYC Mayor Adams Joins Calls for George Santos to Resign

By    |   Friday, 27 January 2023 03:14 PM EST

Just two weeks ago, New York City Mayor Eric Adams pledged to work with embattled Rep. George Santos, the Republican congressman representing parts of Queens and Long Island; but now, he's agreeing with other critics who say it's time for Santos to leave office over false claims he made about his family and background.

"I believe personally that he should leave," the Democrat mayor said Friday in an interview with CBS 2 News, reports Politico. "I think he should resign. What you see is something that is unimaginable, and I think it only gets in the way of what needs to be done in Congress this year."

Earlier this month, however, Adams wouldn't join others in urging Santos to resign, even with calls from the state Republican Party calling on him to leave.

"I don't think my opinion matters here," the mayor said about Santos while speaking at a press conference about the New York City budget on Jan. 12. "We're not leaving any stone unturned on who we should be sitting down with to make sure New Yorkers get the resources that they need."

However, Santos is now facing several investigations, and a new poll shows that most New Yorkers want him to step down.

Still, Adams said he thinks it's up to voters to determine if the freshman congressman stays or if he goes.

"I think the voters have to make that determination; but personally, I believe it's time for him to leave," the mayor told CBS 2.
