Sen. Enzi: 'I Told You So' About Obamacare

By    |   Monday, 18 November 2013 06:59 AM EST

More Americans now see that Obamacare was sold to them "on false pretenses," Sen. Mike Enzi writes in a Breitbart.com op-ed column. And that's just what he's been warning about since 2010.

"I warned that rules published in the Federal Register would guarantee that people who liked their healthcare would lose it," the Wyoming Republican recalled. "I warned that healthcare costs would go up. I warned that employers would be forced to cut back worker hours and jobs. I did more than warn this would happen, I offered senators a chance to prevent these calamities. Proponents of Obamacare rejected and ridiculed my legislation."

Now those who disregarded his warnings, and facing "growing public resentment," are improvising dubious "fixes."

"The president, along with members of his party who are facing elections soon, are busy campaigning for proposals they say do what … architects of the law promised in the first place. But folks should think carefully about relying on the same people who repeatedly promised one thing and delivered something far different," he wrote.

Now seeking a fourth senate term, Enzi first must beat primary challenger Liz Cheney, daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney. Trailing badly in the polls, she has criticized Enzi for taking an early bipartisan approach to healthcare reform.

After those efforts failed, Democrats went ahead with Obamacare, The Hill reported.

"The right response would have been to say: 'Absolutely not, under no circumstances,' " said Cheney, appearing on "Fox News Sunday." "And frankly, if all the Republicans would have done that at the beginning, had stood their ground and refused to negotiate and compromise on this, we probably wouldn't be where we are today.

"Instead you have Republicans like Sen. Enzi who gave the president running room, and they gave him cover, and they gave him the ability to say, 'Hey, this is a bipartisan effort.' When in fact it wasn't; it was never intended to be."

The National Journal has rated Enzi among the most conservative senators.
