Mysterious waves pulsing like a heartbeat in Oklahoma this summer have been determined to be emanating from the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant in the southeast part of the state, but they are perplexing geologists, according to National Geographic.

"There's still a lot of strange unknowns here," Los Alamos National Laboratory's Joshua Carmichael told N.G. of activity dubbed "The Anomaly" by Oklahoma Geological Survey's Andrew Thiel.

"I love studying weird, mysterious signals. It's exciting. It kind of pulls the Scooby-Doo out of me."

The mystery in the measurements is in determining whether it is sound or the shake of the earth, or vice versa.

"Nature is conspiring to make the signals travel in such a way that we can't tell whether they're acoustic or seismic," Carmichael said.

Oklahomans are noticing odd noises, ones that seem different than the normal explosions at the U.S. army site.

"Some of the residents were able to specify, I can tell this feels different, it sounds different than some of the earthquakes that we've felt," Oklahoma Corporation Commission spokesperson Sarah Terry-Cobo told N.G.

"It has been very perplexing to us to try to wrap our heads around it."
