As artificial intelligence grows increasingly advanced but remains unregulated, society should be alarmed, Elon Musk told the World Economic Summit in Dubai Wednesday.
“One of the biggest risks to the future of civilization is AI,” Musk said, CNBC reports.
Musk co-founded OpenAI, which developed the AI chatbox ChatGPT, but left the company’s board in 2018 and sold his stake.
Originally, Musk decided to found the artificial intelligence company because “Google was not paying enough attention to AI safety,” Musk said.
“I think we need to regulate AI safety, frankly,” Musk told the World Economic Summit. “It is, I think, actually a bigger risk to society than cars or planes or medicine.”
Musk once famously said that artificial intelligence is “far more dangerous” than nuclear warheads.
Even if regulation slows down AI’s development, it is preferable, the billionaire said.
Musk believes public awareness of AI is growing due to the user-friendly interface of ChatGPT.
“The AI has been advanced for a while,” Musk said.
Last week, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the benefits of AI outweigh the dangers — if it is overseen properly.
Artificial intelligence is striking fear in many, but could actually create a “utopia” of more, and more satisfying, jobs, Nadella said.
“Runaway AI, if it happens, is a real problem,” Nadella said. But if mankind keeps it in check and properly manages AI, it could help societies create better futures, including more fulfilling, less rote jobs, he said.
Google, OpenAI and Microsoft are in an AI race, with Google and Microsoft offering AI-powered search engines. Google’s is called Bard, and Microsoft’s is Bing.
