Former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie officially entered the race for Virginia governor on Monday, making the announcement on his campaign website, EdForVirginia.com.

The website said Gillespie was announcing the formation of his official gubernatorial campaign committee, "Ed Gillespie for Governor," unveiling a logo and launching the website. He will kick off his campaign with a statewide tour in January.

"Throughout this year, Cathy and I traveled the Commonwealth we love meeting friends, conservative leaders, business owners and our fellow citizens to hear more about their concerns and seek their insights," Gillespie is quoted in the announcement. "It's clear that Virginians share a vision of and passion for limited, effective government that grows our economy, creates jobs and gets Virginia back on the right track."

Gillespie was RNC chairman from 2003 to 2005, and spent the last year campaigning for Republicans in his state.

He will face several other Republicans in the primary, including state Sen. Frank Wagner, The Hill reports.

Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam is seeking the Democratic Party as Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe cannot seek another term.
