NY Times: D'Souza Expected to Plead Guilty to Straw Donations Charge

By    |   Tuesday, 20 May 2014 09:05 AM EDT

Dinesh D'Souza, the conservative author and filmmaker, is expected to plead guilty to a charge related to campaign finance violations at a hearing scheduled for Tuesday morning, The New York Times reported.

Last week, the 52-year-old failed to win the dismissal of federal criminal charges pressed in January  that he used straw donors to make excessive contributions to a 2012 New York Senate candidate.

On Monday night, the U.S. attorney's office for the Southern District of New York sent out an advisory that a hearing had been scheduled for Tuesday, with language that signaled a plea is expected, according to the Times.

It was unclear, however, to what charge D'Souza might be pleading guilty.

D'Souza has been accused of illegally directing others to contribute a total of $20,000 to the campaign of Wendy Long, a Republican who unsuccessfully challenged incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat, for a Senate seat from New York.

To date, D'Souza has insisted he did not act with any corrupt or criminal intent. Last week, his lawyer issued a statement saying, his actions were "at worst," an act of misguided friendship toward the candidate.
