Legendary actress Doris Day spoke out about turning 92 on Sunday in an
exclusive interview with People magazine.
"I'm not really fond of birthdays anymore," the star said. "Age is just a number. How you feel and live your life is more important."
She celebrated the milestone with friends in Carmel, California, and shared a photo of herself with her dog, Squirrelly.
The Doris Day Animal Foundation hosted a fundraiser Saturday in honor of the star’s birthday. The foundation also invited fans to sign a birthday card online and encouraged people to donate.
“I am so grateful and honored that fans and friends come from all over the world to help support the precious four-leggers," Day told People.
She also recorded a birthday message that was shared online.
“I know that most of you gather in Carmel every year for my birthday, and to help the precious four-leggers. And I’m truly touched by your love and friendship,” she said in the message.
Day, who starred in such 1950s films as “The Man Who Knew Too Much” and “Pillow Talk,” retired from film and television in 1973, but told reporters during her 90th birthday two years ago that she was still getting offered scripts and projects.
"Every once in a while I think about working again, but they don't make the kind of movies I made anymore.
It's a different world," she told Closer Weekly at the time.
Twitter users shared birthday wishes.
