Lawyers for President Donald Trump are considering volunteering to have him face questions from Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading the Department of Justice's Russia probe.

Politico reported Thursday that if Mueller's team does not seek to interview Trump before Thanksgiving, the president's lawyers could decide to make him available anyway.

Mueller's team is investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia. The probe has looked into allegations that Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort may have violated IRS laws, and also former national security adviser Michael Flynn's ties to Turkey.

According to Politico, the White House wants to show that Trump has nothing to hide.

"Whatever happens with regard to whether or not, or how, the special counsel might want to interview the president, there's no reason to expect that would be combative," a senior White House official told the outlet.

Trump continues to claim that allegations of collusion with Russia are false. He blasts reports about the matter as fake news on a routine basis.

During an interview with Fox News this week, Trump said the Russia story is a diversion from why Democrat Hillary Clinton lost the election last fall.

"Russia was an excuse used by the Democrats when they lost the election," Trump said. "They said — they lost the election — they sat in a room and they said, 'Wow, we look bad.'"

It was reported last month that Mueller sought to speak with six current and former advisers to Trump as he continues to dig for answers.
