The Department of Homeland Security will up the amount of visas for seasonal workers by 15,000 for the remainder of the fiscal year, The Daily Caller reports.
DHS decided to increase the amount of H-2B visas allowed after consulting with the Department of Labor, and was given the authority to do so in the omnibus spending bill that Congress recently approved.
President Donald Trump decried the use of foreign workers during his campaign, although he defended his company's use of H-2B visas at his golf resorts during a 2015 primary debate by saying, "I've hired in Florida during the prime season — you could not get help," according to The Washington Post's transcript.
"Everybody agrees with me on that," he added. "They were part-time jobs. You needed them, or we just might as well close the doors, because you couldn't get help in those hot, hot sections of Florida."
DHS press secretary David Lapan told reporters, "we're talking about American businesses that are at risk of suffering irreparable harm," according to The Washington Times. "We do think that fits into the American-first focus of the administration."
