House Intelligence Committee head Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., a vocal critic of the media who’s faced scrutiny for his handling of his panel’s probe into Russian meddling, has created his own news outlet, Politico reported.
“The California Republican” touts delivery of “the best of U.S., California, and Central Valley news, sports, and analysis,” and is paid for by Nunes’ campaign committee, Politico reported.
The outlet was registered in mid-2017 by communications consultant Alex Tavlian, whose company, Sultana Media, has received $7,773 from Nunes’ campaign since last July.
Anthony Ratekin, Nunes’ chief of staff, railed at Politico in an email comment, complaining; “Until Politico retracts its multitude of fake stories on Congressman Nunes, we will not go on the record.”
California Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told Politico he hadn’t seen the site, but Andrew Janz, Nunes’ main Democratic challenger for his reelection, derided the media outlet as “typical Devin Nunes,” and one that “spread misinformation to his constituents, who he knows will just eat it up.”
