A daughter of an Ohio deli owner who had been in the United States for nearly four decades says officials from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) tricked her father into coming to a routine meeting and then deported him to his native Jordan, CBS News reports.

Amer Adi Othman was deported last week on grounds his first marriage in 1980 to an American woman was a ruse to get a green card to stay in this country. ICE said Othman's first wife claimed their marriage was illegitimate. She reportedly recanted that accusation years later.

Othman's daughter Haneen Adi, told CBS her father was arrested Jan. 16 after he went to meeting with ICE that he was told was simply a check-in meeting.

"If that's not tricking somebody, if that's not targeting somebody, I don't know what is," Adi said.

Adi said her father was told in August he would be deported Jan.7, but was granted a temporary stay and told to come to the check-in meeting. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, accompanied him to the meeting. Ryan said Othman was "heartlessly targeted by the Trump administration."

"They just took him into custody for absolutely no reason," Othman's daughter told CBS. "There was no justification at all. They told everyone there that this was just the decision they had decided on."

Adi, her mother – Othman's second wife — and Adi's three siblings are U.S. citizens. Othman and Adi's mother have been married for nearly 30 years.

She said her father had tried to become a citizen for many years.

"My entire life has been lawyer after lawyer, ICE meeting after ICE meeting," Adi said. "He's tried every single thing. They made it almost impossible for him.”
