Denmark will soon have its own Island of Misfit Toys for immigrants.
According to The Hill, Denmark's Minister for Immigration, Integration and Housing Inger Stojberg posted a message on Facebook, saying the country will set up housing offshore for people whose asylum claims were rejected.
"If you are unwanted in Danish society, you should not be a nuisance to ordinary Danes," a translation of the post reads.
"Rejected asylum seekers convicted of violation of the penal code, arms law, law of law, and law on drugs on or around an exchange center now [have a] new address. . . . They are undesirable in Denmark and they must feel it!"
The migrants will be placed on Lindholm Island, a small island roughly two miles off the Denmark coast. One hundred people might be housed there, a group that will include migrants who attempted to gain asylum in Denmark but were rejected.
The program will cost $115 million over four years and will include the construction of facilities that are slated to open in 2021.
The New York Times reported Monday the 17-acre island is currently used for researching contagious animal diseases, and one of the two ferries that travels to it is even named Virus. People who cannot be deported will be sent to the island, and they will live on their own there on a stipend of roughly $1.20 per day.
