Dems Launch Ads on Overturning of Roe Anniversary

By    |   Monday, 24 June 2024 02:46 PM EDT

A series of advertisements in women-focused media outlets were launched Monday by the campaign arm of Senate Democrats to mark the two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court ending a federal right to an abortion, Politico reported.

The ads by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee will run on websites such as Cosmopolitan and Harper's Bazaar, and will be geared toward readers in Arizona, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin.

Those who view the ads will be directed to a new website backed by the DSCC that targets the positions of Republican Senate candidates on abortion and other issues related to reproductive health.

"The Republican overturn of Roe v. Wade and the escalating attacks it has triggered on women's right to make their own medical decisions has ensured reproductive freedom will be a defining issue of the 2024 Senate elections," DSCC Chair Gary Peters, D-Mich., told Politico. "Voters will reject GOP candidates and protect Democrats' Senate majority in November."

In a 6-3 decision on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court ruled in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization that the Constitution does not confer a right to an abortion, overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey and returning authority to regulate abortion to the people and their elected representatives.

The ad campaign arrived as the Senate Democrat leadership has been forcing votes on reproductive rights on the floor, including ones on access to contraception and in vitro fertilization.

The GOP has blocked the legislation from moving forward, at times providing competing versions.

Public anger over the overturning of Roe v. Wade is still considered as one of the main causes for lack of Republican success in the 2022 midterm elections, and Democrats are trying to capitalize on that sentiment again.

"The anniversary of the Republican Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade underscores the stakes of this year's Senate elections and the importance of protecting Democrats' Senate majority with the power to confirm or deny Supreme Court justices," DSCC spokesperson Annie Lentz said, according to Politico.
