Democrat Strategist Trippi: Obama a 'Drag' on Party

By    |   Wednesday, 08 October 2014 10:27 PM EDT

President Barack Obama made a mistake saying that although he isn't on the ballot in November his policies are, Democratic strategist Joe Trippi said Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "The Kelly File."

Calling the remarks "a gift to the Republicans," Trippi said the unpopular Obama is "a drag on Democrats," who are actually trying to avoid mentioning him in their campaigns.

A new Investor's Business Daily/Tipp poll shows 53 percent of Americans believe Obama has a failed presidency, Fox News reported. Trippi pointed out the former President George W. Bush had a rate of 68 percent at the same time in his presidency.

Although Bush's numbers have since improved, they still caused Republicans to lose the House in 2006, and Trippi says Obama's numbers will cause Democrats to lose the Senate this year. The current balance is 55-45 in favor of the Democrats.

"Democrats are going to lose U.S. Senate seats," Trippi said. "The question now is how many?"

Trippi believes the number will be larger than four. Republicans need to gain six seats to lead the Senate since a 50-50 split would give Democratic Vice President Joe Biden the tie-breaking vote.
