Rep. Debbie Dingell, as a senior House whip, on Tuesday would not give a direct answer to repeated questions about whether there are enough votes among Democrats to push for impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.
"I have been where Nancy (Pelosi) has been," the Michigan Democrat told Fox News' "Outnumbered Overtime" Harris Faulkner, who pushed her on the vote question. "It would tear this country apart. When people talk about what our responsibility is as members of Congress, I have read this (Mueller) report not once but twice."
And while the report did not recommend any criminal charges, Dingell said it did show that Russia is trying to interfere in U.S. elections and attack "our pillars of democracy."
"My job is to defend our constitution and defend this democracy," said Dingell. "We don't need a divided country when it comes to impeachment."
But she warned that as long as Trump keeps "throwing kerosene on the fire," Democrats won't have any choice but to move forward.
Meanwhile, she said Americans are more concerned about other issues, noting that when she goes back to her district, she hears more people who are worried about their healthcare costs.
"I'm sort of stunned and speechless, I'm still talking about what happened today," said Dingell, responding to Pelosi saying Trump is engaged in a cover-up, and a meeting on infrastructure being canceled.
"We're not doing anybody a favor with this happening," said Dingell. "But I'm deeply, deeply disturbed because we're not doing anybody a favor with this happening. We got to get it figured out. The president, if he wants to put these investigations aside, he's got to stop feeding the fires.
