Former 'Meet The Press' Anchor David Gregory Joins CNN as Political Analyst

Monday, 28 March 2016 10:47 AM EDT

David Gregory, who took the reins of NBC's venerable "Meet the Press" from longtime anchor Tim Russert before leaving the network, has taken a contributor job at CNN.

Gregory will largely hold forth on the Time Warner-owned cable outlet's morning program "New Day," according to a spokeswoman for the program. He will serve as a political analyst. Little additional detail was forthcoming.

In Gregory, CNN has landed a name well-known in Washington political circles, something that could serve it in good stead as its "New Day" continues to vie with MSNBC's "Morning Joe," an A.M. offering focused largely on politics.

Gregory has surfaced on CNN in the recent past, helping "New Day" with its coverage of the Iowa caucus, for example. CNN's announcement Monday makes his relationship with the program official. He joins as one of the program's three main anchors, Michaela Pereira, prepares to depart t host her own Los Angeles-based show on CNN's sister outlet HLN.

News of Gregory's contributor relationship was reported previously by Politico.
