New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie sacrificed himself as a "suicide bomber" attacking Florida Sen. Marco Rubio in Saturday's GOP debate, says U.S. News & World Report political writer David Catanese.

Christie "sacrificed himself on Saturday night," Catanese said Tuesday on Fox News Channel's "Shepard Smith Reporting."

"I think he was dangling in the single digits without much of a chance. He needed to jump back in the media," Catanese said. "He knew going at Marco was his play. I think he also blows up himself because … Republicans don't like intra-party warfare."

But who does benefit? Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Catanese believes.

"Christie hurts Rubio and probably benefits Kasich if you're looking at the moderate stream of governors to choose from," he said.

As for front-runner Donald Trump, Catanese said Trump will win New Hampshire, but needs a double-digit lead over the second-place finisher and must have at least 30 percent of the vote to consider having made a strong finish.
