Calling for a ramping up of cyber security funding and efforts, conservative radio host New Gingrich says modern war can be secretly waged on anyone without us even knowing it.
"We are fighting a new war, with an invisible front line and an indiscernible enemy," Newt Gingrich wrote in a Fox News op-ed. "We can be attacked at any time, without warning. And we aren't doing enough to fortify and protect ourselves."
Gingrich was promoting his "Newt's World" podcast, detailing efforts to fight "America's secret cyberwar" that "we've been fighting it since the dawn of the Internet."
"This war doesn't involve tanks, artillery, or traditional armies," he wrote. "It isn't even always fought between nations. It includes cyberattacks on companies, governments and individuals. It involves hacking, spreading propaganda through social media, intellectual property theft, and stealing military secrets."
This highly advanced, technological warfare requires investment, innovation, and highly skilled labor, particularly since everyone has a cellphone, laptop, or other device at risk of theft of property, privacy, or information.
"The truth is, we have several highly trained, smart teams of people in our government and private sector who get up every day to go fight this war on our behalf, but their job is incredibly tough," Gingrich wrote. "The main reason is that virtually every American is a target."
