The FBI is reportedly investigating hacks into the computer networks of several United States-based news organizations, including The New York Times.

According to CNN, officials suspect Russian intelligence in the cases. The hacks occurred in recent months.

"Like most news organizations we are vigilant about guarding against attempts to hack into our systems," New York Times Co. spokeswoman Eileen Murphy told CNN. "There are a variety of approaches we take, up to and including working with outside investigators and law enforcement. We won't comment on any specific attempt to gain unauthorized access to The Times."

The hacks, according to CNN, took place against reporters and news organizations.

There has been a pattern of high-profile hacks this year that officials believe are rooted in Russia, including one on the Democratic National Committee. Documents from that hack were released days before the party's national convention last month.

Officials suspect the Russians are trying to catch a glimpse of U.S. politics ahead of the November election.

Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign blamed Russia for the DNC hack, documents from which showed the DNC displayed favoritism toward Clinton over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The campaign said Russia is trying to help put Republican Donald Trump into the White House.
