A spokeswoman for Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday slammed CNN for a story it published about Kim Jong Un's sister, "stealing the show" at the Winter Olympics.
"Speaking of stealing, Otto Warmbier was tortured & killed at the hands of the Kim regime after being accused of stealing a poster," wrote Alyssa Farah. "Let’s not whitewash North Korea's record."
Kim Yo Jong, deputy director of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Workers' Party, is the first member of the North's ruling dynasty to visit South Korea since the Korean War ended in 1953. On Saturday, she invited South Korean president Moon Jae-in to visit North Korea, news that made headlines around the world.
The CNN report centered on Kim's "diplomatic dance" at the Olympics, but many criticized it as a puff piece on the sibling of a dictator.
Farah in her tweet referenced the death of American Otto Warmbier, who died last year after being held prisoner for nearly two years in North Korea. Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster during a guided tour. His father, Fred, attended the opening ceremony of the Olympics with Pence.
