Cigarettes have become "deadly" as of Monday, when a new rule kicked in requiring tobacco companies to highlight just how harmful and addictive smoking can be, Time reported.

A federal court ruling has forced tobacco companies Altria, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco, Lorillard, and Philip Morris USA to update their websites to include five truths about cigarettes and how they could impact a smoker's health as well as those around them.

As of Monday, the companies must note the potentially deadly consequences of smoking, as well as how tobacco companies have designed cigarettes to enhance the delivery of nicotine, making them more addictive.

Tobacco companies also must disclose the lack of significant health benefits of smoking low tar and light cigarettes and note the adverse effects to exposure of secondhand smoke.

Each year there are about seven million deaths occurring worldwide, all linked to tobacco use, with 890,000 of these arising from breathing in second-hand smoke.

The UN health agency recently cautioned that research showed there was "a serious lack of knowledge" about the different health risks associated with tobacco.

Tobacco companies have been locked in legal battles for years, attempting to deflect promoting such information to the public.

In a turn of events, R.J. Reynolds, Philip Morris USA, Altria, and Lorillard funded a 52-week ad anti-smoking campaign last year after more than a decade of wrangling in federal court.

In 2006 U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler ruled the tobacco companies must pay for and place the ads to make up for decades of advertising deception but it took eleven years of appeals before the ruling was a success.
