Democratic voters are "uninspired" by Hillary Clinton as she runs for president, NBC's Chuck Todd said Friday.

Todd, the chief White House correspondent for NBC News, made the comments on the "Today" show when host Savannah Guthrie asked him about Clinton.

"I don't think the Democratic Party rank-and-file is dissatisfied with Hillary Clinton," Todd said. "I think the better way to call it is they're uninspired by her. You talk to people that are saying they're for Sanders, and they'll tell you, Savannah, I'll vote for Hillary Clinton if she's the nominee, but they're not so in love with her that they want to go and caucus for her, that they want to put a bumper sticker on their car or a yard sign in their yard.

"That's sort of the disconnect right now, and that's something Hillary Clinton has to deal with when she comes out to Iowa today."

When Clinton announced her candidacy for president in April, she had a significant lead in the polls over her potential challengers. She still leads in the majority of national polls, but cracks have begun to appear in her campaign.

For one, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has made up ground on her, and he's filling out campaign venues as he spreads his message.

Further, an ongoing scandal revolving around Clinton's use of a private email address and server during her time as secretary of state (2009–13) is becoming a bigger issue as each day passes. The FBI took possession of both a thumb drive containing classified emails she sent with the address and the actual email server that was being maintained by a Denver-based IT company.

Critics, including Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina, have slammed Clinton for bending and even breaking the rules when she was a government employee.

"The old adage comes to mind that the cover-up is worse than the crime," Fiorina said Friday. "She lied about her emails, she lied about her server, and she also lied about Benghazi. The more we hear, the worse this gets."

A Friday report claimed one of the top secret emails discovered on Clinton's private email system was about the use of drones in the Middle East.
