New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's approval rating has tanked to an all-time low, with just 26 percent of voters in his state giving him a favorable opinion in a new poll.
The Rutgers-Eagleton survey results show Christie's approval rating has gone down three points since February. The 64 percent of New Jersey voters who have an unfavorable view of the governor is a five-point increase since February.
Christie was once a Republican candidate for president but
quit the race in February. Soon after,
he endorsed Donald Trump for president.
Fifty-six percent of state Republicans support Christie, down from 63 percent two months ago. Sixty-three percent of independents and 87 percent of Democrats give the governor an unfavorable rating, according to the numbers.
Christie's job approval rating is also down since February, from 37 percent to 31 percent.
The poll found that some of the reasons for Christie's declining numbers are his character, his job performance, and his honesty.
"Negativity toward Christie continues to grow, but not entirely because of his support for GOP front-runner Donald Trump or his own involvement with the 2016 election cycle," said Ashley Koning, the assistant director of the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling (ECPIP) at Rutgers University.
"Instead, Christie's unpopularity stems from the same longstanding reasons that voters have cited in both their praise and condemnation of him throughout his tenure — reasons that disenchanted voters emphasize now more than ever two months after Christie's return to governing full time."
Christie's name has been floated around as a
potential running mate for Trump if he becomes the GOP's presidential nominee.
