Almost one-fourth of adults in the U.S. are meeting guidelines for aerobic and strength exercises, according to the Center for Disease Control's National Center for Health Statistics.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that people between 18 and 64 have at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity at least twice a week, with that agency's Healthy People 2020 targeted a goal of 20.1 percent of adults hitting that goal by 2020, CNN reported.

The CDC report shows that the goal has been exceeded with 22.9 percent reaching it.

People in Colorado had the highest percentage of adults who hit the goal, with 32.5 in that state reaching it, the CDC's report said.

Many of the states that did not reach the Healthy People 2020 goal were in the Southeast, including Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, the report said.

More men than women met the guidelines, with an average of 28.8 percent of men hitting the guidelines and 20.9 percent of women doing so, the report said.
