Brewer: Obama Ignoring Arizona’s Border Security

Gov. Jan Brewer is calling for the federal government to take more action to secure Arizona’s border, arguing that other states have received the resources to stem the tide of illegal immigrants flowing across their boundaries.

In an interview with ABC News, Brewer said the other border states have been given increased security resources, from electronic surveillance to fencing, but similar requests from Arizona have fallen on deaf ears.

“We don’t understand why the federal government will do that for other states, but they refuse to do it in Arizona,” said Brewer, a Republican. “I am not going to sit back and be the governor of the state of Arizona and not make a position for Arizona to the federal government that our border needs to be secured. It’s as simple as that.”

Referring to her state’s border as “the gateway for the criminal element,” Brewer said ranchers living along the border no longer feel safe.

She added that until Arizona’s border is secure she will not support the Senate’s immigration reform bill which proposes to offer a 13-year path to citizenship for America’s 11 million undocumented immigrants.

She said if one of the bipartisan Gang of Eight senators who drew up the immigration bill were to call her, “I would say our border is not secure, and I would not be in a position to support their measure.”
