The Army is deliberating whether convicted deserter Bowe Bergdahl is entitled to nearly $300K in backpay for his five years in captivity, the Army Times reported.
Of course, Bergdahl, who avoided prison time after pleading guilty to desertion, never would have been captured by the Taliban had he not walked off his base in Afghanistan in 2009.
"Based upon the results of trial, the Army is reviewing Sgt. Bergdahl's pay and allowances," Lt. Col. Randy Taylor told Army Times. "His final pay and allowances will be determined in accordance with DoD policy and Army regulation."
The first step is waiting for the Army commander in authority to approve the sentence handed down to Bergdahl, which was dishonorable discharge and reduction in rank in addition to escaping prison time, Army Times reported.
Then the process of determining what — if any — Bergdahl might be entitled to for his years in captivity, Army Times reported.
