More than 400 children separated from the illegal immigrant parents at the border are still in government-funded shelters, the Washington Examiner reported.

The tally — reported in court papers filed Thursday night — comes a month after a the Trump administration missed the July 26 deadline to reunite families, the Examiner reported.

According to the court filing, 416 children — 14 of whom are younger than 5 years old — remain in care where the parent is either not eligible to be reunified with the child, or the parent is not in the United States, the Examiner reported.

Parents of 304 of the children in custody are outside of the United States, the documents show, the Examiner reported.

The documents also show another 57 children are still in government care where further review showed they were not separated from their parents by the Department of Homeland Security.
