CBS News: Iran Bombing ISIS Targets in Iraq

By    |   Tuesday, 02 December 2014 07:21 PM EST

Iran is conducting airstrikes on Islamic State (ISIS) targets in Iraq using American-made fighter jets, according to a new report.

CBS News reports that Iran has been using F-4 Phantom jets for missions over Diyala province, located east of Baghdad and on the nation's eastern border with Iran.

Iran is not coordinating with the United States for the strikes, according to the CBS report. The bombing runs are being flown in support of Iraqi troops.

No members of the U.S. military are operating in Diyala province.

A Huffington Post report, meanwhile, confirmed Iran's participation in the fight against ISIS. The website says Iran, a nation dominated by Shiites, feels threatened by the Sunni terror group.

An anonymous U.S. official told the Huffington Post the government is "aware" of Iran's military intervention.

"We are aware of that. I wouldn't say we're necessarily concerned with it — we kind of have our eyes on it," the official said.

The official added that unless Iran poses a threat to U.S. forces, Washington will not do anything to stop the bombing.

IHS Jane's Defence Weekly reported over the weekend that a jet seen attacking ISIS targets most likely belonged to Iran.

Iran acquired the U.S.-made jets in the 1960s and 1970s.
