President Donald Trump called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday to congratulate him on his re-election for a fifth term.

"The two leaders agreed to continue working in the coming years in the closest way for Israel and the United States," Netanyahu said in the statement on his Twitter account.

Trump made the call from his Air Force One plane, the statement said, after Netanyahu won a parliamentary election and looked set to be able to stay in power with the support of religious-rightist parties, despite a strong showing from his main centrist challenger.

The tweets as translated on Twitter by Microsoft:

"U.S. president Donald Trump called to congratulate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his victory in the election, from the Air Force One plane. President Trump warmly congratulated Prime Minister Netanyahu and the people in Israel.

"He thanked President Trump for the tremendous support in Israel, including recognition in Jerusalem and the Golan, as well as the steadfast position in front of the Iranian regime, including the president's decision against Iran's Revolutionary Guards."

"Both of the leaders returned and expressed an appreciation for the profound friendship between them and the countries. The two of them continued to work together in the next few years for the sake of Israel and the United States."
